Beware of Tax Debt Negotiation Firms

Sunday we learned of another scam plaguing consumers, this time in the area of tax debt negotiation. Barbary Lundy of West Palm Beach has paid the company $2,500 so far without receiving any services and has been unsuccessful in canceling her contract.

The firm recently highlighted in this story is TaxMasters, who according to the Better Business Bureau has received over a thousand complaints and has been given an “F” rating.

The Florida Attorney General’s Office is investigating, as is the AG in Texas and Minnesota. In 2010 the company booked 45 million in revenue while spending over a third of that in advertising. Deceptive business practices have also led to hundreds of complaints online.

The television commercials are convincingly well done, but it just goes to show, you can’t believe everything you see on TV. Experts warn to steer clear of tax help firms promising to eliminate your tax debt with high-pressure sales tactics and large front fees.
